In this special one-day series of harp master classes, renowned harpist Ann Heymann and IAC’s resident harp instructor Mia Theodoratus will teach two workshops and one seminar open to all levels. Participants will learn a range of techniques and skills including exercises in playing by ear; an exploration of classic, historical and innovative harp techniques; Irish harp terminology as well as learning to master traditional repertoire; and much more.

PLAY WITH "FEEL"
A series of exercises will help to develop a connection between the music in your head, your fingers and ear. This approach will then be applied to a short tune that will be taught aurally. Though note-reading is not necessary to participate, for future reference "dots" will be handed out at the end. Players are welcome to audio record this session, and, as is usual, for their own use only. Guided by Ann Heymann & Mia Theodoratus.

Carolan is Ireland's most famous harper-composer, yet his style, technique and instrument are not widely understood—even amongst today's Irish harpers. Through Power point and performance-demonstration, Ann Heymann will shed new light on the Irish harp; from its obscure beginnings, through its golden era and into its modern renaissance. With Q&A, followed by an opportunity to participate in a "harp taster" from 2:15-2:45pm (downstairs).

PART I: RULES OF THUMB & OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
How does hand position and fingering affect tone, volume, speed and phrasing? Enjoy this ergomic exploration of classic, historical and innovative harp technique to
expand both your technical and arranging skills. This hands-on workshop will be in round-table format—with Ann Heymann & Mia Theodoratus at the head. Various segments will be filmed and made available to participants as a digital download.
PART 2: VARIATIONS & IMPROVISATION IN A TRADITIONAL FRAMEWORK
Ann Heymann will use Irish harp terminology to lead players through various traditional processes that serve to create idiomatic harp variations on traditional/historical repertoire. Advanced registration will allow players to listen to on-line musical examples should they wish to preview. While sight reading skills are not mandatory, music notation will be handed out to serve as a template from which participants are invited to jot down ideas. Participants are welcome to audio-record selected portions of the workshop—for their own use only, as is usual.
